US Keyboard Typing Instructions (Gnome)


When using a US keyboard on Linux/Gnome, you need to designate a "Compose Key" in order to
produce accented characters. There are various options for this designation (not all of which work
well). A choice which works well is the RIGHT Ctrl key. For the programs below (where applicable),
the RIGHT Ctrl key is the only option.

Thus, to produce an accented character, type:
rightCtrl > accent > character (using SHIFT as necessary)

To produce ü or Ü, there is an alternative sequence:
rightCtrl > quote > character (u or U)
or
rightCtrl > dot > character (u or U)

To produce the little superscript "o" or "a" as in 2º, 3ª, etc., use this sequence:
rightCtrl > upArrow > character (o or a)

This indicates that you can type using any keyboard layout not containing dead
keys for the purpose of producing accented characters (e.g. Russian), and that
you can also type in Brazilian Portuguese using an ABNT2 keyboard, a US
International keyboard (with dead keys), or a common US keyboard using a
special "compose" key designated by you in Ubuntu (see below).

If you right-click the mouse on a text entry box in the application concerned, you will
see a popup menu enabling you to choose the keyboard you wish to employ.
